Some people have a dark pigment in the gums called melanin. Melanin is also present in skin and is responsible for giving dark color to the skin. Actually it is made within the skin/gums by special cells called melanocytes in the deeper layers. This then migrates towards the upper layers.
The presence of the pigment varies from person to person. In some it may be hardly seen while in others it might be presence in excess which gives almost a black color to the gums. Thanks to advances in modern cosmetic dentistry..it is now possible to remove this pigment.
The process of removal of melanin pigment from gums is called gum depigmentation or gum pigmentation treatment or even gum bleaching. It can be performed by a blade or by laser. Laser depigmentation is a more desired method as is a completely bloodless procedure. The procedure is done under local anesthesia and simply involves scraping the superficial layers of the gum with blade or exposing the superficial layers to laser beam. The area is covered by a special dressing and left to heal. The dressing is removed after a week and the pink gums are visible.
Gum depigmentation cost in India can vary depending whether it is performed by blade or laser. Laser surgery is expensive but considering the numerous benefits it has, it is definitely the preferred technique.
